New Program Faculty
Steven Smith of Fuse TV unfortunately has had to cancel his appearance on Tuesday, February 19. However, we are extremely excited to announce that Leslie Simon and Trevor Kelley, co-authors of Everybody Hurts, will be presenting the
"Understanding Our Students by Understanding Emo Culture" session with Professor Peter Lake as moderator on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 from 1:30-3:30 p.m.
Dr. Ken Winters will be joining Professor Howard Gardner, Jim Hundrieser, Scott Varady, Ann Franke, and Sheila Trice Bell in the Plenary Session: Learning Theory and Millennials: Competencies and Accountability on Sunday, February 17 from 1:00-4:00 p.m.
Ken Winters, Ph.D. is the director of the Center for Adolescent Substance Abuse Research, a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Minnesota, and a Senior Scientist with the Treatment Research Institute, Philadelphia, PA. He received his B.A. from the University of Minnesota and a Ph.D. in Psychology (Clinical) from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. His primary research interests are the assessment and treatment of adolescent drug abuse. Dr. Winters has published numerous research articles in this area, and has received several research grants from the National Institute of Health and various foundations. He is an Associate Editor for the Psychology of Addictive Behaviors, and is on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Child and Adolescent Substance Abuse and the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment. He was also the Lead Editor for two Treatment Improvement Protocol Series (# 31 and # 32) published by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (SAMHSA) that focused on adolescent drug abuse assessment and treatment. He is a consultant to many organizations, including the Hazelden Foundation, National Institute on Drug Abuse, Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, Partnership for Drug Free America, World Health Organization, and the Mentor Foundation (an international drug abuse prevention organization).
Dr. Douglas Holt will be joining Anne Franke, President of Wise Results LLC in presenting the Workshop on Pandemic and Infectious Disease Planning on Sunday, February 17, from 9:30 - 11:00 a.m.
Douglas A. Holt, M.D., F.A.C.P., is the Director of the Hillsborough County Health Department (HCHD) which is the fourth largest (by county population) of 67 Florida county health departments. It provides services to the county's 1.4 million residents and is responsible for assessing, maintaining, and improving health and safety within the county. Dr. Holt is also a Professor of Medicine at the University of South Florida (USF).
Dr. Holt received his B.S. from Davidson College in 1980. He then went on to earn his medical degree from the University of South Alabama in 1984. He then moved to Tampa, Florida where he completed his residency in internal medicine at the University Of South Florida College Of Medicine. Since completing his residency, Dr. Holt joined the USF faculty in 1989. Prior to being appointed as the Medical Director of the Hillsborough County Health Department, he was the Chief of Medical Staff for two years. Dr. Holt was also the Acting Deputy State Health Officer in September of 2001 to February 2002.
He is an active member of many state and local organizations such as the Hillsborough County Medical Association, American Medical Association, Public Health Leadership Society, the Florida Medical Association, School Readiness Coalition, Hillsborough Community College Foundation Board of Director's, National Association of County & City Health Officials, the Children's Board Advocacy Committee, and the Healthy Start Coalition Board of Director's. In addition to the community activities, Dr. Holt has played an active role in many Florida Department of Health workgroups and committees, including the Fiscal Management Advisory Council, Fetal Infant Mortality Review Board, the Secretary's Roundtable, and the Florida Association of County Health Officers.
Dr. Holt has led an initiative to incorporate quality management and a co-creating philosophy throughout the Hillsborough County Health Department. The health department has embraced the Sterling Criteria as its management system and has started the transformational journey. The health department is initiating new alliances in order to better leverage available funding to achieve its mission which includes collaborating with organizations and local universities to advance the public health system to state-of-the-art levels, improve its relationship with the county commission, and strengthen partnerships with other county health departments to develop a consortium for functions such as purchasing and the resolution of common issues. The health department's Vision and Values focus is on Customers, Employees, and the Community. The department's Vision and Values will serve as the foundation for all we do, now and in the future.
Dr. Holt has received numerous award and accolades throughout his career thus far. They include the Appreciation Award from the Florida Association of County Health Officers in 2006, the University of South Florida College of Public Health Outstanding Partner Award from the Florida Center for Public Health Preparedness in 2004, the Appreciation Award from Tampa Fire Rescue in 2003, the University of South Florida Lifetime Appreciation in 2003, a Commendation from the State of Florida for Dedicated Service and Outstanding Leadership in 2001, the Certificate of Appreciation from the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners in 2001, and the Outstanding Community Service Award from the University of Tampa, Department of Nursing in 2000.
Ada Meloy will be joining Don Gehring, Bill Kaplin, John Hall, Gwen Dungy, Mort Silverman, Ken Zick and Jean Demchak in the Future Trends in Higher Education Law and Policy Post Conference on Wednesday, February 20, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Ada Meloy joined ACE in 2007 after a distinguished 28-year career at New York University's Office of Legal Counsel. She served as deputy general counsel for over 10 years and as acting general counsel for NYU in 2005- 2006. Meloy handled a wide range of legal matters during her tenure at the university, including academic disputes, discrimination issues, tenure, grievance and discipline matters, and intellectual property litigations. She litigated on behalf of the institution on numerous occasions, handled the day-to-day management of the Office of Legal Counsel, and supervised the work of outside counsel.
Meloy has served extensively on committees and spoken at conferences of the National Association of College and University Attorneys. In 2000, she co-founded the Prisoners' Reading Encouragement Project-which enhances literacy and educational opportunities for inmates-for which she currently serves as a director. She has been a member of a bar Committee on Professional Ethics, and the Disciplinary Committee for New York attorneys. She is a member of the New York and District of Columbia bars and the bars of various federal courts. In addition, Meloy has served as a guest lecturer in higher education law at New York University and Georgetown law schools.
Meloy is a graduate of Wellesley College (MA), where she was a Wellesley Scholar. She earned her J.D. from the NYU School of Law in 1973. Prior to joining NYU, she was an associate at the New York law firm of Cahill Gordon & Reindel.
Mark Rhoades will be joining Helen Konrad in facilitating the Immigration Update session on Sunday, February 17, from 11:15 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
Mark Rhoads is a director in the Immigration Practice Group. His focus is on temporary visas and permanent resident green cards for university researchers and professors; high-tech and information technology personnel; international managers and executives; and professional personnel in accounting, engineering, advertising and many other professions. In addition, Mr. Rhoads provides advice to employers to simplify the employment of foreign personnel on topics including: employment contracts, employer protections such as non-compete agreements and trade secret protection, discrimination issues, and employee termination issues.
Mr. Rhoads speaks regularly to university audiences, business groups and human resource professionals on immigration and employment issues. He has been a featured speaker at the annual conferences of the National Association of College & University Attorneys (NACUA), the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), the National Technical Services Association and the National Student Employment Association, as well as regional conferences of these organizations. Mr. Rhoads was also an invited panelist on a nationally televised video produced by University of Tennessee on employment and immigration issues for college career service professionals. Mark is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and is the co-author of McCandlish Holton's U.S. Immigration Law Handbook, A Guide for Business.
